Barguna MP sued on extortion charge

A case was filed against lawmaker Showkat Hasanur Rahman (Rimon) with a court in Barguna for allegedly extorting money and gold ornaments from a local Awami League leader.

Md Idris Chowdhury, president of district Tanti League and general secretary of Rayhanpur union AL, filed the case with the Speedy Trial Court on Sunday.

Bashir Miah, son of Selim Fakir of the union, has also been made accused in the case for abetting in the 'crime'.

Taking cognisance of the complaint, the court ordered the officer-in-charge of Patharghata Police Station to investigate it and submit a report in this regard, reports UNB.

According to the case statement, Hasanur Rahman demanded Tk 1.0 million (Tk 10 lakh) from Idris.

The MP along with Bashir snatched gold ornaments and Tk 96,500 from him on August 18 at gunpoint, the complainant claimed.
