Beetroot being cultivated commercially in Gaibandha Farmers eye huge profit

Beetroot, a foreign vegetable, is being cultivated commercially in the district for the first time with an eye to earning huge profits.
Although beetroot trees look like a couch, its leaves are green and reddish. The main part looks dark pink or reddish purple.
This vegetable containing various nutrients and herbs is also called superfood.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Gaibandha, beetroot is being cultivated commercially for the first time in the district.
A farmer couple - Farukuzzaman Farooq and Mahfuza Begum - have started cultivating beetroot at Supari village in Gaibandha Sadar upazila.
They said they are happy with more profits than other crops in the short span of 03 months.
Farukuzzaman Farooq, a farmer, said, "With the financial help, we cultivated beetroot in November last. Now, there are about 1,000kg of beetroot on the land."
Mahfuza Begum said, "Our beetroot production has been good. Many people are now eager to cultivate beetroot."
Meanwhile, many farmers have been encouraged to see the success of beetroot farming by the farmer Farooq-Mahfuza couple.
"We have provided farmers with financial and technical assistance," Haroon Or Rashid, manager of the SKS Foundation, told the Financial Express.
Gaibandha DAE Deputy Director Md Khorshed Alam told the FE that the commercial cultivation of beetroot has started in the district for the first time.
Both soil and climate are suitable for the beetroot cultivation. Its production is high in winter, he added.
"Since beetroot is a profitable crop, we will take initiative to expand beetroot farming in the future."
