CHANDPUR, Dec 01: More than a hundred marginal farmers of Hajiganj Upazila's Badarpur remain in acute poverty as they are unable to utilise 200 acres of their farmland since 2016 due to waterlogging.
Water could not be drained from their land as a culvert under a village road was blocked with soil as part of the construction works of a power grid sub-station of 132/33 KV on five acres of land. None of the growers were compensated.
The farmers do not see a way out of the problem despite repeated requests made by badly affected farmers to the power grid authorities, upazila agriculture officials, and the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Hajiganj.
Bahadur Mia, Amir Hossain and Khalilur Rahman are among the 15 severely affected farmers, who talked to this correspondent informing them of their condition.
Farmer Renu Munshi said they became seriously impoverished and helpless because of the waterlogging. "No one is taking responsibility," he added. One of the farmers said they are also unable to cultivate fish on the waterlogged land.
Hajiganj UNO Md Ibne Al Jayed Hossain said, he visited the spot and necessary steps will be taken with assistance and cooperation of all.
