A child has died after being tossed off his father's motorcycle in Debidwar Upazila of Cumilla.

The accident occurred near Baniapara Azgar Ali Girls High School in Debidwar Municipality on the Cumilla-Sylhet highway around 10:00 am on Sunday, said Debidwar Police Station chief Mohammad Moniruzzaman.

The deceased, eight-year-old Md Khalid Hossain, was the son of former police officer Moazzem Hossain Swapan of Gopalnagar village in Rasulpur Union of the same Upazila, bdnews24.com reports.

Witnesses say that the child was returning home with his father from a Hafiziya madrasa named Babus Salam in the municipal area. On the way, he was tossed off the motorcycle as it traversed the bumps on the uneven road. A covered van coming from behind crushed the boy, killing him on the spot. After the accident, the child's father took away his bloodied body.

Babus Salam Madrasa teacher Md Abu Sayeed said that Moazzem joined their madrasa for an administrative job. Since then, Khalid has also been visiting the madrasa with him regularly.

He said, “The accident occurred on their way home after (the father) finished (his) work at the madrasa in the morning. Khalid used to visit the madrasa with his father but had yet to be admitted.”

Police officer Moniruzzaman said the child died on the spot.

“We have sent police there,” he said.
