Farmers of Jalalabad Union under Sadar upazila in the district have become highly benefitted from coriander cultivation this year.
According to local market survey, coriander is selling at Tk 3,500 to Tk 4,000 per maund (40kg.) at local markets.
Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Gopalganj said 1,115 hectares of land have been brought into coriander cultivation here this year with a production target of 1,672 tonnes.
Md Khakon Biswas, 45, a farmer of village Suktail Bonbari under Jalalabad union of Sadar upazila, said he cultivated coriander on five bighas of land this year.
"I expect about 35 maunds of coriander from my field, which market price is Tk 122,500 and production cost is Tk 35,000," said a farmer, Khakon.
Miron Biswas, sub-assistant agriculture officer in Jalalabad union, said a total of 136 local bighas of land have been brought under coriander cultivation in Jalalabad.
But, farmers are too much vigorous on this farming. Soil and weather condition is favourable in this region for coriander cultivation, he added.
Mafroza Akther, upazila agriculture officer (UAO) in Gopalganj, told the FE that in recent years farmers of this region are interested in coriander farming because farmers are good profit from this spicy crop produce comparatively any other crops. A total of 166 hectares of land have been brought into coriander farming in Sadar upazila.
Farmers achieved a good economic benefit from this coriander farming, UAO Mafroza added.
Bashar Sheikh, 40, a coriander farmer of village Char-ghaga under Jalalabad union of Sadar upazila in the district, said he cultivated coriander on three bighas of land this year.
Abdul Kadir Sarder, deputy director at Khamarbari, Gopalganj, told the FE that a total 1,115 hectares of land have been brought under coriander cultivation in Gopalganj district this year.
About 15,000 farmers are involved in this farming under five upazilas in the district this year, he added.
Sabuj Biswas, 28, another coriander farmer of village Suktail Bonbari under Gopalganj Sadar upazila, said a farmer can get good profit from coriander cultivation in a short period as coriander is a profitable spice crop.
