Cyclone Midhili wreaks havoc, ruins tk 2b crops in five districts of Chattogram

Government estimates indicate that Cyclone Midhili, despite being categorized as a 'weak' storm, caused significant damage to crops valued at Tk 2 billion in five districts of Chattogram when it recently struck the coast of Bangladesh.

A report from the Department of Agricultural Extension revealed that winter crops bore the brunt of the damage, with losses totalling Tk 906.4 million. Additionally, Aman paddy incurred estimated losses exceeding Tk 820 million.

The department on Monday forwarded the report detailing the storm's impact on crops in the districts of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur, according to a bdnews24.com report.

Md Nashir Uddin, a divisional deputy director of the department, said the ministry will decide on assistance or incentives for the affected farmers based on the report.

The cyclone has damaged Aman paddy of 432.6 hectares of land, according to the report. Pea, mustard, Boro paddy seed beds, betel and lentils have also been damaged.

Nasir reported that the majority of Aman paddy damage occurred in the Lakshmipur and Noakhali districts, with Chattogram experiencing losses in winter vegetables. The crop damage in Lakshmipur is worth Tk 1.26 billion.
