A detainee has been beaten to death inside Jamalpur District Jail.
Jail Superintendent Golam Dastagir said the detainee, 25-year-old Pagla Hazrat, was bludgeoned on the head while asleep early on Thursday.
He died on Friday morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Hazrat had been remanded in jail in a narcotics case.
According to authorities, another detainee, Rahidul Mia, 40, repeatedly struck Hazrat in the head with a piece of wood from a toilet door.
Hazrat was taken to Jamalpur General Hospital before being moved to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died.
Superintendent Dastagir said the reason behind the fatal assault is being investigated.
The body has been handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination.
He added that preparations are under way to file a case with Sadar Police.
