A fire has swept through a slum in Chattogram’s Bayezid Bostami area, destroying around 50 houses.

The blaze broke out around 9:50 am on Monday near the railway line behind a factory operated by industrial group KDS.

The area is home to factory workers and various other low-income families, reports bdnews24.com.

Six units of the Fire Service were deployed, and the fire was brought under control after nearly an hour.

Shah Imran, deputy assistant director of the Fire Service’s Chattogram region, said the initial assessment suggested the fire may have started from a cooking stove in what is known locally as Ledumiar slum.

He said firefighters faced difficulties because there was no accessible water source nearby.

“Later, water was supplied through pipes from the KDS factory, which helped us extinguish the fire. There were no casualties,” he added.

The Fire Service's initial estimate put the damage at around Tk 300,000, though a full assessment is still pending.
