With the fall of water level in all major rivers flowing through the district, the flood situation started improving; however, flood-affected people living on the shoals and river basin areas are still suffering.
The official of Bangladesh Water Development Board sources said the water level of the Brahmaputra river decreased by 8 cm in last 24 hours till 6 am on Sunday.
Though the river's water decreased during the period, it was still flowing 10 cm above the danger level at Fulchharighat point, according to a BSS report.
Many flood victims who had taken shelter on flood control embankments and flood shelter centres with belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds have started going to their houses as the flood situation started to improve.
The standing crops and summer vegetables have been damaged making the flood-affected people more worried about their food security.
The Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said that crops on 6436 hectares of land owned by 66,800 farmers had gone under floodwater.
The crops worth about Tk 760 million produced on 3973 hectares of land had been damaged, added he.
The damaged crops included Ropa Aus, jute, sesame, groundnut, maize, Aman seed bed, green chili, parble, eggplants, cucumber, lady's finger.
To mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims, the government and non-government organisations including international donor organisations intensified the relief distribution aid to the affected families of the district, said an official of the DC office.
