Police arrested Dabirul Islam, the former seven-time Awami League MP for the Thakurgaon-2 seat.
According to Shahidur Rahman, chief of Ruhia Police Station, He was detained from a house in the Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila’s Ramnath Bazar area around 2 am on Thursday.
The former Thakurgaon district Awami League president had gone into hiding ever since the Awami League government fell in the face of a student-led mass uprising, police say, according to a bdnews24.com report.
Police conducted a raid on the home of former Awami League leader Alamgir in the Ramnath Bazar area on the basis of a tip-off on Wednesday night. Dabirul was found there.
Two cases have been filed against Dabirul on charges of murder, extortion, and land occupation since the fall of the Awami League government.
A trader named Habibur Rahman Bablu filed a case on September 3 with Thakurgaon Judicial Magistrate Rahima Khatun. He was accused of extorting Tk 100 million and illegally occupying land.
The magistrate heard Bablu’s testimony and instructed the chief of Baliadangi Police Station to investigate the incident as a case. Dabirul was named as the prime suspect among 28 listed in the case.
On September 25, Abdul Jabbar, the father of student Mahabub Alam, filed a case over his son’s death at the Thakurgaon Senior Judicial Amli Court.
The chief of Baliadanga Police Station has been instructed to investigate the case and provide the report. Dabirul is also the prime suspect among 38 listed in the case.
