Farmers in different areas of the northern district are getting financially benefitted through garlic cultivation.

Owing to huge profits, the cultivation of the spicy crop is gaining popularity in Rangpur district, official sources said.

A good number of farmers are now showing interest in garlic cultivation which has become profitable in recent years.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Rangpur, garlic cultivation has exceeded its target this season in all eight upazilas of the district.

Garlic has been cultivated on around 1,300 hectares of land in the district against its target of 1,277 hectares.

Md Nazir, a garlic grower of Haragachh Thakurdas area in Kaunia upazila, told The Financial Express that he has cultivated garlic on 30 decimals of land this season at a cost of around Tk 24,000.

"I now expect to harvest at least 27 to 28 maunds of garlic and earn a profit of over Tk 100,000."

The farmer also said he got a satisfactory profit from the crop produced on his land last year.

Jasim Mia, a grower of Morneya area of Gangachara upazila, told the FE, "I have cultivated garlic on one bigha of land this season. The demand for the crop in the market is high and its price is also higher."

"I hope the garlic yield from my one bigha of land will be about 40 to 45 maunds and the profit will be around Tk 160,000."

He also said due to good profits, he is cultivating the spicy crop by reducing the cultivation of the crops like paddy, jute and wheat.

Many farmers of his area are showing their interest in garlic farming and are getting financially benefited, he added.

Rangpur DAE Deputy Director Reaz Uddin said owing to garlic's higher price and good yield, its cultivation is getting popular among local farmers.

The DAE has been providing growers with advice and necessary support to enhance garlic yield, he added.
