CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Jan 29: The growers of Khirshapat mango, one of the most popular and tasty mango varieties are happy over getting Geographical Indication (GI) for Chapainawabganj district's extraordinary produce.

The noted mango variety has drawn attention of GI authority for its taste and flavour.

The cultivation of this mango variety is expanding gradually across the vast Barinda tract including Chapainawabganj district.

Khirshapat makes up 20 to 25 per cent of total mango production in the country.  This variety is exported to different countries, particularly in Europe and Middle East.

Among the mango export varieties, Khirshapat mango has been listed on top position.  GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or reputation that are due to that origin.

In addition, the qualities, characteristics or reputation of the product should be essentially due to the place of origin.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Munjurul Huda said farmers have brought over 29,570 hectares of land under mango cultivation this season aiming to produce around .03 million tonnes mango. We are providing all sorts of support among the poor farmers this season to make the farming a grand success, DAE added.
