An alleged drug peddler was killed in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at no 4-Beribadh Ghat area of Padma River in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Alim, 50, son of late Aftab Uddin Biswas, a resident of Noyaladanga area of the upazila.

Syeed Abdullah Al Murad, squadron leader of Rab-5, said a team of Rab-5 conducted a regular drive in the area to recover drugs.

Sensing the presence of the elite force members, the criminals opened fire on Rab members, prompting them to fire back that resulted in a gunfight.

One of the criminals was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee.

Five Rab members were injured during the gunfight.

They also recovered 6.7 kgs of hemp, two pistols, five bullets and two magazines from the spot, reports UNB.
