Heatwave sickness: Patients crowd Gopalganj hospitals

GOPALGANJ, May 05: Many people are being admitted to hospitals in the district every day after falling sick due to the severe heat wave.

Hospital sources said the admitted patients were suffering from various diseases, including diarrhoea, fever, heatstroke, dysentery and pneumonia.

Hundreds of patients, mostly children and elderly people, are being admitted every day to Sheikh Sayera Khatun Medical College Hospital (SSKMCH) and Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital.

The sources also said as many as 582 patients were admitted to SSKMCH on Saturday while 1,160 to the general hospital.

During a visit, Mozaharaul Haque Bablu, a patient admitted to SSKMCH, told this correspondent, "I've been suffering from dysentery and fever for five days. Many patients are taking treatment in the hospital every day."

Dr Niaz Mahamud, deputy director at SSKMCH, told The FE, "We give service and arrange orientation training."

Dr Jibitesh Biswas, superintendent of Gopalganj General Hospital, told The FE that they advise people to stay out from the sunlight and eat liquid food every day amid the sultry heatwave.

Kurban Ali, 48, a rickshaw-puller, said public movement has decreased amid the searing heatwave. "The scorching heat has made us physically and mentally weak and our livelihood miserable."

Gopalganj municipal authorities and the district and police administrations provide cold water and beverage for people at different points in the district town.
