Heavy rainfalls have caused immense sufferings for thousands of people in Sadar, Faridganj and Matlab Uttar upazilas of the district.
According to local weather office, it rained 142mm in the last 24 hours in Chandpur till Friday morning since Thursday morning. It's the highest in the present season and the second highest in the whole country.
During the torrential rainfall, the normal civic life came to a halt forcing people of all walks of life to stay in doors for the days on Thursday and Friday.
No vehicles were seen on the roads, nor any beggars or vendors. Almost all posh markets, shopping malls and green and fish markets were shut till night due to nonstop rainfalls accompanied with gusty winds since morning on Thursday.
As a result, all passenger launches and long distance buses had to change their schedules and in the afternoon, all launches were asked not to ply due to inclement weather and gusty wind.
Due to heavy rainfall, roads in the town were under knee deep water in many areas like Nazir Para, Palpara, Chowdhuripara, Bishnudi Madrasa Road, Gazibari Road, Shapoth Chattor, and many other roads , lanes and by-lanes. So, people faced immense problems while moving from one place to another because of various urgent family works.
According to many tax payers and town dwellers, due to poor and faulty drainage system, waterlogging is created here and there in the town after a shower of rainfall.
On the other hand, the river eroded homeless and helpless people residing on the Meghna river banks are in constant fear as at any moment Chandpur Town Protection Dam may develop cracks due to turbulent waves and strong current of the mighty River Meghna.
Talking to the FE, Shah Alam Mallik, Mostafa Kamal, Shah Alam Chokdar, Lokman Sarker , and many others have expressed their grievances and fear.
Around 10km away from Chandpur main town, thousands of people in 32 remote char areas on the west bank of the Meghna in Chandpur Sadar, Haimchar and Matlab Uttar Upazilas are also in constant fear of flooding as the water level of the Meghna is rising rapidly due to the on- rush of flood waters from upper streams.
Sadar UNO Shakhawat Jamil Saikot has told the FE he is keeping touch with the local elites and people's representatives there regarding any problems arising in the char areas by announcing urgent messages through Police forces.
The same words were also told by the UNO Matlab Uttar Mahmuda Kulsum Moni. However, the UNO of Haimchar UZ could not be available when this correspondent tried to contact him over cell.
While in Faridganj Upazila Sadar town , the main roads from Onua Chattar up to Govt AR High School and Upazila Complex areas at the Upazila Sadar town went under knee deep stagnant rain waters on Thursday and Friday due to faulty and poor drainage system.
All sorts of vehicles got stuck here and there in the stagnant waters causing immense problems for the people and vehicles. The pedestrians, students and traders are the worst sufferers.
Contacted, UNO Sultana Razia has said, "We are trying to mitigate the sufferings of people by flashing out the stagnant waters from the road."
