Makeshift shops put up by hawkers along footpaths and significant portions of roads in different areas of Chattogram, are creating hindrance to pedestrian movement and contributing to severe traffic congestion in the port city.
Since the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, maximum footpaths have turned into hawkers' markets, forcing people to use roads for walking. On other hand, both sides of roads in many areas are being used as parking zones, halting smooth flow of vehicles.
Allegations run rife that hawkers are running businesses encroaching upon roads and walkways by bribing the influential quarters.
Meanwhile, with the Eid ul Fitr approaching near, the traffic congestion is getting worse day by day as more and more people are flocking to the markets to buy things for the festival.
Due to the jam, the port city roads remain blocked for hours, taking a toll on people.
