JOYPURHAT, Apr 07: Summer bottle gourd cultivators of all the five upazilas of the district are expecting a bumper output this season.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said repeated bumper production and good market prices encourage the growers to cultivate the vegetable every season.
Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman said bottle gourd farming is profitable in summer. Growers can make a handsome profit from it.
Golzar Hoossain of Akkelpur upazila said, "Farmers had shown the seeds last month. Now they are taking care of the saplings."
Some 5,000 bottle gourds can be produced on a bigha of land.
The farmer said a small sized bottle gourd is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25, a middle sized one at Tk 30 to Tk 35 and a large one at Tk 40 to Tk 50 in the retail market.
Deputy Director of DAE Sudhindranath Roy said he personally encourages the farmers to bring more land under the production of bottle gourd for high profit.
