The pro-Awami League teachers' organisation Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad' formed a human chain at Jahangirnagar University (JU) to protest against the threat to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On Monday (May 22) at 12 pm, they held this human chain program on the road adjacent to Shahid Minar of the university. The teachers demanded exemplary punishment of the BNP leader who made the threat.
ASM Feroz Ul Hasan, Proctor of the university and Professor of Government and Politics in charge of hosting the human chain, said, "We are standing here holding the slogan that terrorism has no place in Bangabandhu's Bangla. Every time there is an attempt to kill Bangabandhu's daughter, Sheikh Hasina, she will appear anew. While she is being praised all over the world, some conspiratorial group, who conspired even in 1975, are still conspiring."
Professor Bashir Ahmed, Member Secretary of the Bangabandhu Teachers' Association and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Sociology, said, "Sheikh Hasina is not only the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, she is a world leader."
"There are threats to kill Sheikh Hasina around the upcoming elections. They are trying to destroy Bangabandhu's spirit by threatening to kill him actually."
University Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sheikh Md. Monzurul Haq said, "We cherish this country, we cherish Bangabandhu. Our honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is taking the country forward with love. We have to be careful about such conspiracy. Whoever did this should be punished exemplary."
Treasurer Professor Dr Rasheda Akhtar said, "There have been attempts to kill the Prime Minister many times. They have tried at different times but have not succeeded. However, threatening to kill in public like this is a very despicable incident. We strongly protest and condemn it."
Chief Patron of Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad and Vice-Chancellor professor Dr Nurul Alam said, "Yesterday, BNP Leader in Rajshahi threatened to kill the honourable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who made the country self-sufficient in food, built the Padma Bridge, provided electricity to every house in Bangladesh, build the Metrorail, Karnaphuli Tunnel -- who is working, putting her life in risk for the welfare of the people of this country. When the country is moving towards a developing country, she is being threatened to be killed. We strongly condemn it and demand exemplary punishment by bringing the perpetrator under the law."
About 80 teachers from different departments participated in the human chain, including the Deans of different faculties, Department Chairpersons, and leaders of Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad.
It is to be noted that during the BNP protest rally held in Shibpur of Puthia Upazila of Rajshahi on May 19, Rajshahi district BNP convener Abu Saeed Chand threatened to send Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the graveyard.
At midnight yesterday, the university branch of the Chhatra League immediately held a protest march and burnt an effigy of BNP leader Abu Saeed Chand.
