A man described as an "active Jubo League worker" has been hacked to death in Jashore after he was called away from his home, his family claims.
The incident occurred in Daulatdihi village after 12:30 am on Wednesday, said Jashore Kotwali Police Station chief Abul Hasnat.
The dead man has been identified as Rezaul Islam, 50, according to bdnews24.com.
Rezaul was an active Jubo League activist, and local villagers were involved in his murder, his wife Sheuli Begum alleged.
Sheuli said, "He (Rezaul) received a call on his mobile phone around 12:30 am. He went to the roof and spoke over the phone for a while. Then he opened the door and went outside. When asked where he was going, he said, 'I'm going to talk to someone.' When asked who called him, he said, 'I'll come back and tell you.'"
After some time, she woke to her neighbours’ calls and learnt that her husband had been killed. Later, she went to the scene and saw Rezaul's body lying on a felled tree.
OC Abul Hasnat said, "The criminals called Rezaul Islam, hacked at him repeatedly and killed him after slitting his throat near his house. When informed of the incident, police went to the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to the Jashore General Hospital morgue."
The OC also said that the deceased Rezaul was named in nine cases at Jashore Kotwali Police Station. Most of them were filed on charges of attempted robbery, weapons and drug possession.
