A man has been beaten to death on his way home following an arbitration in Noakhali’s Begumganj.
The incident took place on Saturday night in the Pakmunshirhat Bazar area of Sharifpur Union, said Begumganj Model Police Station chief Md Shamsuzzaman.
The deceased, Jobayer Hossain Rakib, 23, hails from Khanpur village in the union. Rakib used to work in various shopping malls in Dhaka and Noakhali.
Citing locals, the police said that a few days ago, Rakib's cousin's son had an argument with a local shopkeeper over a trivial incident. Later, initiatives were taken to resolve the matter locally.
People from both sides gathered for a meeting at Pakmunsirhat market on Saturday night. Locals then asked Rakib to leave the scene. Later, he left for home with his younger brother Rimon.
On his way home, he was stopped in a dark place in the market area and attacked by a group of men.
The attackers hit Rakib with iron rods indiscriminately in his head and other parts of the body injuring him seriously.
Police officer Shamsuzzaman said, “Locals rescued him in a bloodied state and took him to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead.”
He also said that police have visited the scene once the incident was reported. Police are working to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive for the murder.
