MAGURA, Nov 17: Aman growers in the district are frustrated over the present market price.
Sources said newly-harvested T-Aman paddy has started appearing in the local markets. Though a bumper production of the crop has been achieved this season, low prices have failed to bring smile on the faces of growers.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said some 58,430 hectares of land were brought under the production of T-Aman paddy in the district. The total production stands at 1,82,050 tonnes.
Motiur Rahman of Belnagar village under Magura Sadar said he cultivated Aman on three bighas of land got around 44 maunds of paddy.
He said paddy is selling at Tk 550 to Tk 600 per maund this year.
"The present price only covers our production cost but brings almost no profit", the grower added.
Another farmer Belal Joarder of Defulia village under Magura Sadar said paddy prices usually jump after starting paddy procurement drive.
So if the government starts Aman procurement drive immediately the growers will be benefited.
Magura district marketing officer Jakir Hossein admitted that Aman is selling at a low rate this year than that of the previous year.
District food controller Rezaul Islam said "We are on processing to start Aman procurement drive. However the drive may start in the coming month."
Meanwhile, our Bogura correspondent adds: T-Aman growers in the district are passing busy time harvesting the crop.
A good number of farmers said Aman harvest is going on in full swing. They are getting a good yield.
On completion of paddy harvest growers will grow mustard, potato, maize, sesame, pumpkin, cucumber and other Rabi crop on the same land.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and other government and non-government organisations have taken adequate measures in this connection.

He has already harvested crops of five bighas of land and got 100 maunds of yield.
President of Chatal Mill Owners' Association Mobarrak Hossain said newly-harvested paddy is being sold at Tk 900 to Tk 1100 in the retail market.
Deputy Director of DAE Pratul Chandra Sarker said farmers have so far harvested crops of 56,000 hectares of land till Saturday.
