Three people, including a mother and child, have been killed as a truck and an autorickshaw crashed head-on in Sunamganj’s Shantiganj Upazila.
The accident occurred at 7:15 pm on the Sylhet-Sunamganj regional highway near Bagherkona village, according to Abdul Ahad, chief of Shantiganj Police Station.
The dead have been identified as Keshba Priya, 40, her daughter Prathama Das, and Sajal Ghosh, 50. Keshba lived in the Ukilpara area of Sunamganj Municipal Town, while Sajal hailed from Brahmanbaria’s Nabinagar, bdnews24.com reports.
Keshba and her family hail from Habiganj’s Baniachang Upazila. Prathama was a student in seventh grade at the Satish Chandra Girls High School in Sunamganj.
Citing witnesses, police said the Sylhet-bound truck crashed head-on into the autorickshaw, killing Keshba and Sajal on the spot. Prathama was rushed to Shantiganj Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. A doctor on duty there declared her dead.
Prathama’s father Pranay Das said his wife and daughter were headed to the house of a relative in Sylhet.
Gloom has descended in the area following their deaths, said Govind Kumar Das, a family member of Keshba.
OC Abdul said that the truck driver fled the scene after the accident. Police are working to identify him and are investigating the incident to take the necessary legal action.
Locals say that the road sees regular accidents due to reckless driving and speeding. They have raised demands to place speedbreakers on the road and increase traffic monitoring on it.
