RAJSHAHI, July 11: Naogaon district, which supplies the bulk of the country's rice, has made a silent revolution in mango production. The northern district has surpassed Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts in terms of mango production in the past fiscal years.
According to Rajshahi Regional Agricultural Extension Department (DAE), Naogaon alone produced 3,70,000 tonnes of mangoes in the 2021-22 season while the neighbouring Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj districts produced 3,13,736 tonnes and 2,6,156 tonnes of mangoes respectively.
Besides, Naogaon is ahead of the neighbouring two districts in terms of average mango yield per hectare. In the 2021-22 season, the average mango production in Naogaon was 12.55 tonnes per hectare while it was 11.13 tonnes and 10.67 tonnes in Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj.
However, Chapainawabganj district is still ahead of Naogaon and Rajshahi in terms of mango orchards. The bordering district has mango orchards on 37,588 hectares of land while Rajshahi and Naogaon districts have mango orchards on 19,578 and 30,000 hectares of land.
Most of the mango orchards in Chapainawabganj are hundreds years old while those of Naogaon are comparatively new.
Shamsul Wadud, Additional Director of Rajshahi Divisional Agricultural Extension Directorate, said that the production from old big trees has reduced in Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj while it has increased in the new and small trees in Naogaon.
He said that mango trade would exceed Taka 60 million this year in the division while there would be a trade of Tk 20 million in Naogaon alone.
