A fifteen-day tree fair and tree plantation campaign in Khulna division is gaining momentum at Khulna Circuit House Ground in the city.

A large number of tree lovers thronged the tree fair on Wednesday with the nursery owners turning the fair ground into a fiesta of different local and foreign varieties.

Short varieties of plants, especially early fruiting saplings are the most desirable by the urban planters and gardeners as those are suitable for gardening.

Plant lovers can buy from an array of saplings of seasonal fruits to flowers, fruit, ornamental and medicinal plants and banana plants derived through tissue culture to bonsai.

Different kinds of farm instrument like grubber, sprayer, pot, fertilizer are also being sold at the fair.

An employee of tree fair control room ZM Manjurul Karim said that a total of 1,718 tree saplings have been sold on Wednesday. Large crowds were seen at Sonali Nursery as they are displaying different kinds of dwarf fruit plants.

The visitors were impressed by the fruits already hanging on the plants. Md Shafiqul Islam, the owner of the nursery, said he bought different kinds of dwarf fruit plants mainly targeting the urban gardeners.

He is also displaying moringa plants of different sizes and ages at his stall. “The plants bear fruit throughout the year and the price of each plant ranges between Tk 300 to Tk 500,” Islam said.

He said he brought the seed of moringa from India and used the seeds to made saplings. Islam is also displaying some moringa trees.

Shanti Ranjan Ghosh, an official of Agrani Bank in the city, bought a moringa plant, two mango plants and three lemon plants from the nursery. He said he was searching for short and quick fruit-bearing plants so that those can survive in rooftops and bear fruits within a short time.

“The newer varieties of Harivanga mango, Himsagar mango and Amropoli are among the best selling plants in the fair,” he said.

“Around 70 stalls of 50 nurseries are showcasing a wide variety of plants at the tree fair,” said Karim of tree fair control room, reports BSS.
