CHATTOGRAM, Apr 23: The Chattogram unit of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) suspended medical service in private chambers on Tuesday in connection with the beating of physicians at private hospitals in Chattogram city and Patiya upazila.

The doctors stopped all services at private hospitals and diagnostic centres in the port city demanding punishment to those involved in the beating of doctors.

On April 18, the BMA Chattogram branch declared the programme for stopping all services from 6:00 am on Tuesday to 6:00 am on Wednesday.Patients who came for treatment or medical tests suffered a lot due to doctors' strike.

According to officials of several private clinics, the patients who were admitted earlier are only being given medical care as no new cases are being admitted or diagnosed.

BMA Chattogram president Dr Mujibul Haque Khan said, "We announced the programme in protest against the beating of our colleague. Our programme will continue until Wednesday morning." On April 14, guardians attacked the doctor-in-charge of a medical centre in the port city for a child's death ‘due to medical negligence.’ Earlier on April 11, Dr Raktim Das was beaten and seriously injured at Patiya General Hospital.
