Prices of vegetables, essentials up in Chandpur after Eid
Supply ample, yet the commoners are hit hard

After Eid-ul Azha, the prices of almost all varieties of vegetables, fish and other essential items are up and showing upward trend in all markets of the town and rural haats and bazars hitting hard the commoners and low wage earners in Chandpur Sadar.
Prices of chicken (cocks) have soared to Tk-270-280 per kg from Tk220-230 per kg just before Eid - to the surprise of the common consumers. The same is the case with broiler fowl too.
Consequently, the fixed income-group people as well as the day labourers and poor wage earners are passing hard days as their kitchen shopping budget fails- said a number of affected people like Shafiqul Islam Khan, Sarwar Hossain, Tofazzol Hossain, Mir Farid Hossain, Yusuf Mia, Mofij, Faruque Mia and others while talking to this correspondent.
It was observed that the price of potato increased by Tk5-10 per kg and nowadays it is being sold at Tk-25-30 per kg whereas it was sold at Tk-20 until the day before Eid. Green chilli is also selling for Tk80 per kg, but it was sold at Tk40-50 per kg before Eid.
Pointed gourd, tomato, snake gourd, lady's fingers , sponge gourd and cucumber which were sold at Tk40 per kg till before Eid-ul-Azha are now being sold at Tk50- 60 per kg.
Bitter gourd is selling at Tk70-75 per kg and teasel gourd for Tk80 per kg.
Carrot (local) sells at Tk60 each kg, egg plant at Tk70 each kg and green banana at Tk50 per quadrant.
Bottle gourd (medium sized) was selling at Tk70-80 per piece in Pal Bazar, Biponibag Bazar, Wireless Bazar, Baburhat, Mohamaya Bazar, Bakila Bazar and elsewhere.
Bitter gourd was selling in these markets Tk70-75 per kg. Prices of chicken have soared exorbitantly.
Cock fowl sells at Tk270 -280 per kg whereas it was sold till before Eid at Tk220 -230 per kg. But there is abundant supply of all these items in the kitchen markets. Broiler fowl sells at Tk150 per kg whereas it was sold at Tk120-130 per kg before Eid.
Prices of the leafy vegetables are, however, same as before, almost cheap and being sold at Tk30 per kg.
On the other hand, prices of fish are too much high and so beyond the buying capacity of the have-nots, poorer and low wage earners.
A piece of delicious hilsa fish, weighing one kg, sells at Tk-2500 per kg.
Hilsa fish weighing less than one kg sells at Tk2,300 per kg while three juvenile hilsas ( that make one kg) sell at Tk1,200 per kg and hilsa weighing 500-600 grams sells at Tk-1,600-1,700 per kg at Biponibagh- the busy and bustling kitchen market of the district town.
Prices of ruhi , katal, mrigel, pabda, foli, bele, vata and chew-wa range from Tk400 to Tk 1,000 per kg.
Shrimp of medium size sells at Tk1,000 per kg while big sized shrimp sells at Tk1,200-1,300 per kg. Little sized shrimp is available at Tk700-800 per kg.
Kaski fish sells at Tk500- 600 per kg, shing and magur are too expensive and sell at Tk 900 -1,000 per kg.
Boal,koral and pungas (of river) sell at Tk1,200 to1,300 each kg. Shol (medium sized- one kg ) and Gojar fish sell at Tk600-700 per kg.
It was observed that when day labourers or low wage earners fail to buy any fish of their choice, they at last look at the tilapiya and buy it for Tk250-300, depending on size. Cultured pungas fish sells at Tk220-250 per kg.
