A housewife was tortured to death for dowry allegedly by her husband at Kulibari village in Baghmara upazila of Rajshahi district on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Mukti Khatun, 17, daughter of Abdur Rahim of Sadipur Mohalla in the upazila.
Quoting locals, Ataur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Baghmara Police Station, said Sohel Rana used to torture physically Mukti for dowry.
They locked into an altercation on Thursday night and Sohled beat her up mercilessly.
At one point, when Mukti became senseless, Sohel, along with his family members, poured poison into her mouth to prove the incident as suicide.
However, after she was taken to a village doctor, he declared her dead.
On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, victim's father Abdur Rahim filed a case with the police station on Friday morning, the OC added, according to UNB.
