Rangpur pointed gourd growers eye good yield

RANGPUR, May 07: Pointed gourd (Potol) growers of the district are expecting a good yield of the vegetable during the current season.

According to sources due to congenial weather and high demand, farming of the vegetable is on the rise across the district.

Sources informed the farmers of the region have geared up vegetables farming including pointed gourd during the current season with much enthusiasm as they made huge profit last year from the cultivation of the same. The farmers of the district are expected to attain a good yield of their produces this season as they prefer farming vegetables to other crops, sources further said.

While visiting Ranipukur union of Mithapukur upazila this FE correspondent found the farmers busy taking care of their potol fields. Some delighted farmers were also harvesting their produces which produced abundantly in their fields.

Hasanur, a farmer of Jummakhanpara of Ranipukur union told The Financial Express that he has been farming potol for the last two years. He is fortunate enough farming this vegetable, as its farming gives him good profit, he added.

Hashem Ali another vegetable grower of Nabdiganj village at Pirgachha upazila said he has already earned Tk 10,000 by selling pointed gourd, produced in his lands and he is optimistic of earning more profit.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources potol and some other varieties of vegetables farming have gradually gained popularity in the region during last five or six years.

The local markets are witnessing trading of a large quantity of the vegetables everyday. The quantity is on the rise as there has been a bumper production of the different varieties of vegetable this year, said Saiful islam, a wholesaler at Rangpur city Bazar.

Farmers of many areas under the region are also attaining success in growing chemical free or poison free vegetables including pointed gourd by using eco-friendly pest management method like pheromone trap, sources informed.

The vegetable growers alleged that owing to lack of preservation facilities they have to face difficulties with their produces. If they get adequate preservation facilities they would earn more profit, they added.
