River Police begins journey in Rajshahi

The River Police has launched its journey for the first time in Rajshahi to ensure security at the riverine areas creating high hope among the public in general here.

The River Police has installed two camps– one in Bashari area under Paba upazila and another in Railway Bazar area under Godagari upazila– with 10 manpower comprising two inspectors, two assistant sub-inspectors and six constables in the preliminary stage.

The inhabitants of the areas will feel more secure following the start of the camps and crime will be on the wane consequently, reports BSS.

In the first drive, the Paba River Police seized a huge quantity of illegal current nets from the Padma River last night.

Mehedi Masud, inspector of Paba River Police, said they accompanied by Upazila Fisheries Officer Abu Bakkar seized 2,800 metres of illegal current nets worth around Taka 109,000 from Char Khidirpur area.

He said there is a plan to install a river police camp near to Rajshahi Cadet College in Charghat and install a river police station at Rajshahi

Police Line, however, the Padma river areas from Godagari to Charghat upazilas will command by Rajshahi River Police.

Mehedi also said their manpower will be strengthened in phases. “We will get speedboat and other mechanized boat for intensifying our operational activities,” he added.

Besides, the river police will work for checking smuggling and trafficking of drugs and arms, jatka catching and using of illegal nets in the river.

In November of 2013, River Police was commissioned with an aim to revitalise the rivers and waterways of Bangladesh.
