The body of a seven-year-old girl, who had gone missing on Tuesday afternoon, was found in a sack at her neighbour’s house in Char Nashipur village, under Ambikapur union in Faridpur Sadar, on Wednesday, reports UNB.
The discovery sparked outrage among locals, who beat the prime suspect, Md Haider Molla, 55, to death, despite police intervention.
The deceased child, Tahiya, a first-grader at Char Nashipur Government Primary School, was the daughter of Zia Molla of the same village.
According to locals, Haider was a relative of the deceased Tahiya, being her grandfather's cousin. They said that Tahiya’s body was found hidden in a sack in a room at Haider’s house.
Locals also added that Haider had previously served a prison sentence for rape charges.
Nurul Alam, chairman of Ambikapur Union Parishad said that Haider, son of Zahiruddin Molla of Nashipur, succumbed to injuries inflicted by enraged villagers.
“Police tried to stop the mob, but the situation spiraled out of control due to the large crowd,” he said.
Md Asaduzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station, said that a medical examination will determine whether the child was raped before being killed.
He said that preparations are underway to file a murder case in this regard at the police station.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police Abdul Jalil and Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Shailen Chakma visited the scene following the gruesome discovery.
