JOYPURHAT, Apr 25: Good production and fair market price of snake bean have brought smile on the faces of hundreds of grassroots farmers in the five upazilas of the district this season.

Some cultivators said snake bean production is expanding across the district as the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) took special measures in this connection.

Some 280 hectares of land has been brought under the vegetable cultivation this season.

It was 197 hectares of land last year, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.

Generally snake bean grow well in the winter season but it can be grown round the year if steps are ensured, said farmer Hasan of Akkelpur upazila.

He further said off-season snake bean ensures healthy profit to the farmers.

"I have cultivated snake bean on 22 decimals of land this season spending Tk 4,000," said farmer Salam Uddin of Kalai upazila.

"I have already made a profit of over Tk 12,000," he added.

During a recent visit at Akkelpur Haat this correspondent found one kg of newly-harvested snake bean selling at Tk 30 to Tk 35 in the retail market and Tk 25 to Tk 28 in the wholesale markets.

The snake bean farmers are happy over the plenteous yield. They are getting fair price also, said deputy director of DAE Shudhindranath Roy.
