Staffers at Chandpur Government College and Chandpur Government Mohila College, the two biggest and highest seats of learning in Chandpur district, have to suffer extremely for absence of residential quarters and dormitories.

Sources said both married and single officials and employees at Chandpur Government College have to go through hassles having no residential facilities like family quarters or dormitories on the campus.

Upon children of some of the staffers studying in the tertiary-level educational institution which runs honours and masters courses in almost all subjects, they very urgently need to have a residential accommodation on the college compound.

Established in 1946's June, the college was formally inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Bengal Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy.

At present, 100 teachers and 70 officials and employees are employed in the college. Around 15,000 students are enrolled in intermediate course and 17 honours and 16 master's programmes.

There are two buses to provide transport facilities for the students of distant places ensuring their comfortable and safe journey to and from the college campus. Over the past few years, the college has been developed structurally and spectacularly.

Two new five-storey academic buildings and a five-storey girls' hostel have been built too to cater to the needs of the college administration and the girls of distant upazilas.

The college campus also has a striking beauty. Results of the students in the public examinations are also outstanding, with almost 100 per cent achievement.

Despite all the above good features, the institution has no residential quarters inside the campus to facilitate living of the staffers including the principal, vice principal, teachers and other employees.

Consequently, they all have to reside in rented houses in the town spending huge money, which puts an unbearable financial burden on them in the present days of unusual price spiraling.

Talking to The Financial Express, Vice Principal Prof Khalilur Rahman said college Principal Prof Abdul Mannan is trying to mange fund allocation for construction of dormitories for the principal, vice principal , teachers and staff members.

On the other hand, Chandpur Government Mohila College, established in 1964 in the heart of the town, is an ideal source of higher education for the girl students of the district.

A total of 39 teachers are now working in this college. The principal, vice principal, teachers and other staff members have been suffering much for many years in the absence of family quarters.

That's why they all have to reside in rented houses at high rates in different places in the town.

Talking to the FE, Principal Masudur Rahman said due to unavailability of required land, no dormitory for the principal, vice principal, teachers and other employees of the college could not be constructed.

At present, the college has more than 3,000 students. There are four honours courses running in the college too.

The college has no transport facility for the girl students of the distant upazilas.

The teachers and employees of both the government colleges have, however, urged the government to allocate funds for building dormitories for principals, vice principals, and other teaching and non-teaching staffs to mitigate their sufferings as soon as possible.
