SYLHET, Aug 16: Farmers of Sylhet division are passing busy time in growing Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) paddy in a bid to get a bumper yield of the main crop of the region, said the officials and a number of farmers.
Seedbed was made on a total of 23,671 hectares of land against the targeted 20,421 hectares in the region, an official at the divisional office of DAE's divisional office informed.
The region's target of rice production had been set at 973,793 tonnes of rice from the targeted area of 384,005 hectares, the official added.
The farmers had already cultivated 53 per cent of the target that is about 202,841 hectares of land as yet, said additional director of DAE, divisional office, Md Altabur Rahman.
The farming is going well so far amid a good weather having through rains and sunshine, he noted.
Of the total, highest 88,534 hectares of land are in Sylhet, 56,627 hectares in Moulvibazar, 36,300 hectares in Habiganj and 21,380 hectares of Sunamganj.
During the last year's T-Aman season farming of the crop was also a good one with favourable weather behaviour.
Although the target was a bigger one last year, the crop was cultivated on 375,800 hectares of land in four districts of the division, the official said, per hectare yield stood at about 2.8 tonnes from high yielding varieties and 1.6 tonnes from local varieties.
However a total of 387,150 hectares were cultivated that season.
The farmers in different areas couldn't recover the flood damages while many others failed replanting their lands due to the longer duration of floods.
Severe and prolonged floods that season had damaged Transplanted Aman crops on 5650 hectares, affecting a total of 43,782 farmers in the region.
