Tangail cultivators show interest in guava farming

TANGAIL, Feb 19: Guava cultivation has brought smile on the faces of many grassroots farmers in the district.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, sources, some 797 hectares of land were brought under the production of guava with some 7,710 tonnes of output target.

Kazi, Thai and local varieties are the popular ones in the area.

Farmers' sources said Kazi and Thai guavas are being cultivated at orchards on commercial basis and local varieties are generally grown at homesteads.

This year the local growers have shown more interest in guava farming for high demand and market price, sources added.

Many growers in the area have been financially solvent by growing varieties of guava in recent year, farmers said.    

DAE sources said commercial guava cultivation is gaining ground in the district.

Guava growers were provided sapling for boosting the cultivation in the area, DAR officials added.

Abdur Rashid Miah of Garashin village under Delduar upazila said he has already made a profit of Tk 7,500 and is expecting Tk 7,000 more this season.

Fruit trader Abul Kashem guava has a high demand across the country.

Kazi variety is selling at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg, Thai at Tk 80 to Tk 100 and local varieties at Tk 100 to Tk 120, he added.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Ruhul Amin said guava farming is increasing across the district as it is a profitable initiative.

High demand and good market price encourage the farmers to grow the item on the vast tract of land, he added.
