The recent collapse of an important concrete bridge connecting the Boalia-Matlab Road in Chandpur's Matlab Dakhshin Upazila has been causing daily inconvenience for thousands of villagers.

Before its sudden collapse on March 3, the bridge was used round the clock by residents of Nolua, Upadhi, Bohori, Shantinagar, and a few other neighbouring areas. Commuters say they have to face unexpected problems when they have to use an alternative route, which is costly and time consuming.

Bohori High School Teacher Anowar Hossain said the bridge was dilapidated for the last few years and it collapsed all of a sudden due to the lack of proper care, repair and maintenance. Students and others have expressed a similar sentiment.

Commuters of two high schools, a govt. primary school, a post office, and the bustling Boalia Bazar have been facing serious difficulties due to the lack of a bridge during Ramadan. Pregnant mothers, newly born children and elderly people are the worst victims.

KM Ishmam Hossain, upazila nirbahi officer of Matlab Dakhshin Upazila, said they are trying to repair the bridge.
