Detectives in Bogura have arrested three men for allegedly impersonating the Sirajganj superintendent of police on WhatsApp and demanding money from local businessmen.
The suspects were arrested from Sherpur Upazila of Bogura on Sunday afternoon, Sirajganj’s Additional Superintendent of Police Hafizur Rahman told a press conference at the Sadar Police Station on Monday.
Police identified the detainees as Sohel Rana, 34, Badshah Akanda, 50, and Md Ripon, 22. All three are residents of Sherpur.
Two mobile phones and Tk 3,000 in cash were recovered from their possession at the time of arrest, police said.
According to investigators, the trio had opened two WhatsApp accounts using the phones and set the profile photo of the Sirajganj SP.
They allegedly used the accounts to contact local businessmen and demand extortion and Eid gratuities in the SP’s name.
The scheme came to light after the SP noticed the activity and ordered legal action against those involved.
Acting on the instruction, detectives traced the suspects’ location and detained them in a raid.
Additional SP Hafizur said the process of filing a case against the three accused is under way.
