Three members of a family travelling on a motorcycle have been killed in Lalmonirhat’s Pagram Upazila after a freight truck ploughed into their vehicle.

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Mirzarcote area on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari regional highway.

The victims have been identified as Shafiqul Islam, his wife, and their 8-month-old daughter. They were residents of Dinajpur’s Hakimpur Upazila. Shafiqul was employed as a field worker at a Patgram-based NGO called “Podokkhep,” bdnews24.com reports.

Shafiqul’s son has also been critically injured in the accident. He was rescued from the scene and sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Nazmul Haque, chief of Patgram Police Station, said: “Shafiqul Islam lived with his family in Patgram for the convenience of his work. On Tuesday morning, the family set off for their ancestral home in Dinajpur by motorcycle during the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. As they reached the Mirzarcote Model Mosque area, a Burimari-bound freight truck rammed their motorcycle from behind.”

He added that Shafiqul, his wife, and their infant daughter were killed on the spot, while their injured son was rescued with support from locals and rushed to the hospital.

Police say they are working to identify the truck involved in the accident. The bodies are being recovered and sent for post-mortem examinations. A case is also being prepared over the accident.
