Two Awami League supporters were apprehended by local BNP leaders and activists while distributing leaflets in Shariatpur and handed over to police.
The incident occurred on Saturday around 1:00 am, in front of the Sub-Registrar’s Office in the Vedorgonj upazila of Shariatpur.
The detained individuals are Shahadat Hossain, the son of Faruk Goldar from Deowan Kandi village in the Char Kumaria union of the Shakhipur police station in Vedorgonj, and Fatema Jahan Mita, the daughter of Kanchan Dhalir from Char Chanda village of the same union, as per a UNB report.
According to local sources and police, a group of 10-12 people were distributing leaflets from the deposed Awami League in front of the Sub-Registrar’s office, at various tea stalls and vehicles. When BNP activists noticed, they attempted to detain the group. While the rest managed to flee, Shahadat Hossain and Fatema Jahan Mita were caught. Although they held no official positions within the party, both were supporters of the Awami League. Later, they were handed over to the Vedorgonj police station.
Kadir Dhalir, the leader of the youth wing of the Mahishar Union BNP, said, “I was the first to detain them while distributing the leaflets. Local people later joined me, and then the police arrested them.”
Parvez Hasan Selim, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Vedorgonj police station, stated, “We received information from locals and arrested the two individuals along with the leaflets during their distribution. A case is in process against them.”
