Veggie, fish prices up despite ample supply in Chandpur

The prices of almost all vegetables have shot up despite their ample supplies to kitchen markets in the district in recent times.

On the other hand, most fishes, including hilsa, are selling at exorbitant prices in local markets.

Ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha, the prices of some spicy items are also selling at higher prices.

During the FE correspondent's visit to different markets, it was found that the prices of vegetables have shot up abnormally to Tk 70-80 per kg from Tk 30-40 per kg. Even, leafy vegetables sell at Tk 40 per kg.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chandpur, there is a bumper yield of vegetables this season due to favourable weather.

Besides, due to the last flooding and water logging, the agri land in Chandpur Sadar Upazila, Faridganj, Hajiganj, Shahrasti, and Kochua and also Haimchar Upazilas have been enriched immensely by huge silts and have become more fertile for growing all vegetable items.

At present, one kg of cucumber sells at Tk 60 per kg, potol, chichinga, meringa, lady's fingers, long beans, brinjal sell at Tk 70 per kg, Chhora arum and Kakrole sell at Tk 110-120 per kg.

Green chilli sells at 120-130 per kg. Carrot sells at Tk 40 per kg, plantain sells at Tk 40 per hali, lemons (standard size) sells at Tk 30 per hali, Papya sells at Tk 80 per kg.

Loti sells at Tk 80 per kg. Coriander sells at Tk120 per kg. Bottle gourd (Lau) (medium) sells at Tk 50-60 per piece. Sweet potato sells at Tk 70 per kg.

On the other hand, the prices of various species of fish are being sold at an exorbitant price.

In Biponibagh Bazar, a very busy and bustling market in the heart of the district town, the delicious hilsa is very expensive. A fresh silvery one- kg hilsa of Padma river sells at Tk 3300 while a 500/600 gram weighing Hilsa sells at Tk 1700/1800 per kg, three pieces of small Hilsas, (that make one kg ) sell at Tk 1200-1400 per kg at Biponibagh Bazar.

As a result, the hilsa fish lovers become disappointed in the fish markets, it was observed. Two retired Govt employees, Sarwar Hossain and Shafiqur Rahman Khan, who came to buy Hilsa of the Padma river were seen disappointed as they could not afford to buy a half- kg hilsa at so costly price - Tk 1700-1800 per kg .

Shrimps ( medium sized) sell at Tk 900 1000/00 per kg, Pungas (cultured) at 220 per kg, mono sex tilapia ( cultured) at Tk 250 per kg (medium sized), Rui, katla (medium) at Tk 350-380 per kg. Koi (cultured) fish sells at 400 per kg, shing/magur (cultured) fish sell at Tk 700- 800 per kg. Kaski (Boicha) fish sells at Tk 600/00 per kg. Pabda, Cheuya , bele, vata fish sell at Tk 400/00 per kg.

Despite ample supply, onion price has shot up to Tk 55-60 per kg in last few weeks from Tk 35 sold a month ago. Garlic (local) sells at Tk 115-125 per kg and ginger at Tk 100 per kg.

Meanwhile, all spicy items have become costlier ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha, according to customers and shopkeepers. Cumin sells at Tk 650 per kg, cardamom at Tk 4500-6000 per kg, cloves at 1400-1600 per kg , Kissmis (raisin) at Tk 550-600 per kg, cinnamon at Tk 520-550 per kg, gole pepper ( black pepper) 1000-1200, tejpata ( cassia leaf), almonds are too costly.
