Three children drowned while bathing in a pond during a wedding ceremony at Chanpur Tea Garden in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj on Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Moskan Akter, 10, daughter of Selim Mia; Shamima Akter, 10, daughter of Sajid Ali; and Shania Akter, 9, daughter of Majid Ali — all residents of the Ramganga area in the upazila, UNB reports.
According to locals, the children had accompanied their parents to the tea garden to attend a relative’s wedding. They later went to bathe in a nearby pond but drowned, as none of them could swim.
Locals rescued the trio and took them to Chunarughat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced them dead, said Zahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chunarughat Police Station.
A pall of grief fell over the area following the death of the children.
