Dhaka courts have granted bail to more than 200 leaders and activists of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in different cases without hearing from state counsels or police prosecutors.

Three judges, including Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Court magistrates Nurul Huda and Ali Haider Kamal, granted the bail petitions.

More than 200 leaders and activists had been granted bail so far, said lawyer Omar Farook Farooki.

BNP Standing Committee members Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Nazrul Islam Khan, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Organising Secretary Kazi Sayedul Alam Babul, Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP Convener Saiful Alam Nirob, Dhaka South Convener Rafiqul Islam Maznu, BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Chairperson’s Adviser Shamsur Rahman Shimul, and Joint Secretary General Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Annie were among those granted bail.

Ganaodhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur also got bail in two cases.

”Nur received bail in two separate cases. We hope he’ll be freed today. No public prosecutor or police prosecutor participated in the hearing,” said Nur’s legal counsels Parvez and Khademul Islam.

Jamaat leaders who received bail included Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Nayeb-e-Amir Abdullah Md Abu Taher, former secretary of Gazipur Jamaat Samiul Haque Farooki and former Chhatra Shibir president Rashedul Islam.

“I can tell you about those for whom I’ve submitted the bail bonds. I don’t know about those Jamaat leaders still in jail,” said lawyer Abdur Razzak.

”Lawyers divided into small groups made submissions at the bail hearings in different cases and received the decisions,” said advocate Syed Nazrul Islam.

The leaders and activists got bail on cases filed over attacks on the Setu Bhaban and metro rail stations and others, lawyers said.

On Monday, President Mohammed Shahabuddin said in his speech that all suspects arrested in the cases related to the Anti-Discriminatory Students Movement would be freed.

He also mentioned that families of the dead would receive compensation and necessary measures would be taken to ensure proper treatment for the injured.
