COVID-19: Infections among health workers top 8,000

COVID-19 infections among health workers in the country topped 8,000 mark while the virus also infected over 900 newsmen.

Meanwhile, 88 doctors died in the pandemic since March 18, according to Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA).

Besides, some 2,791 doctors, 1,956 nurses and some 3,258 other health staff got infected with the novel coronavirus since March 8 till September 28 totalling the number to 8005, said BMA, the apex body of physicians, on Monday in a media statement.

BMA expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families in the media statement saying that the contribution of the physicians in such a condition must not be forgotten.

Besides, some 904 newsmen of some 187 national and regional newspapers, TV, online media and other platforms were infected with the virus.

Meanwhile, at least 20 journalists died from the novel coronavirus infection while 11 more died with corona-like symptoms across the country so far.

Newsmen are facing the brunt of the virus infection in the pandemic because of their role of covering events from the frontline, according to a local journalists’ platform titled ‘Our Media, Our Rights’.

Among the total number of infections among newsmen, some 610 were from the capital, it added, saying that some 798 newsmen made recovery and joined their service so far.
