Cox's Bazar fishermen happy with abundant hilsa catch

About 130,000 fishermen of Cox's Bazar in 6,000 trawlers are staying in the sea to catch hilsa.

Fishermen and wholesalers are delighted in Cox's Bazar as a huge catch of hilsa has been netted over the past few days.

About 2500 tonnes of hilsa have been supplied from Cox's Bazar to different parts of the country in the last 7 days. The estimated price of hilsa is about Taka 2.0 billion.

Fishermen are catching hilsa in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Cox's Bazar. About 300 tonnes of hilsa are being sent to different parts of the country daily from various fishing centres of the district including Teknaf, Saint Martin, Maheshkhali, Kutubdia, Chakaria, Pekua in Cox's Bazar.

On Sunday morning, it was seen that 40 trawlers returned with hilsa from the deep sea at the Fishery Ghat of the Bankkhali River in the city.

Rupchanda, Laksha, Coral, Guijya, Chapa, Maitya, Kamila, Popa fish are also caught in abundance. Small boats bring fish from trawlers to the nearby fish landing station for sale.

According to the District Fisheries Department, about 2,500 tonnes of hilsa have been supplied from Cox's Bazar to different parts of the country in the last seven days.

About 40000 tonnes of hilsa were collected in Cox's Bazar last year while the target is 50000 tonnes this season.

Fisherman Azizul Haque sold a trawler of hilsa for Tk 5.5 million. On Sunday morning, he sold the fish to a trader of Dhaka at wholesale price at Fishery Ghat.

Jasim Uddin, owner of a trawler named FB Maer Doa, said that he went fishing in the sea four days ago and caught fish worth Tk 4.0 million. Most of the fish is hilsa.

In the market, each hilsa weighing 900 grams to 1 kg is being sold at Tk 850, 700 to 800 gm Tk 650 to 700, and 500 to 600 gm Tk 550-600.
