Cracks have developed in the newly constructed Building-1 of the Bangladesh Secretariat following Friday's moderate earthquake, which claimed at least 10 lives and left over 600 injured across the country.

Located in the northwest corner of the Secretariat, the building houses the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Public Administration.

Panic gripped several officials working in the building after they noticed cracks on the walls.

Public Works Department (PWD) engineers, however, dismissed safety concerns.

They stated that while cracks appeared on the five-inch-thick brick walls in Building-1 and a few other buildings, the buildings remain structurally sound.

They added that the necessary repairs would be carried out soon.

The 5.7 magnitude earthquake, described as the strongest in recent memory, jolted Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh on Friday. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the epicentre was in Narsingdi.

Panic among the public, particularly Dhakaites, intensified the following day as three more tremors were felt in the capital in just eight hours.
