The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered 1,400 bullets in Panchhari Upazila of Khagrachhari, marking a major ammunition bust in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The ammunition cache was found in the remote Kathaltoli area of Bauddha Monipara on Friday afternoon, said Lt Col Md Rabiul Islam, commander of BGB-3 Panchhari Battalion.
A media statement on Saturday said a team led by Naib Subedar Md Shah Alam of the BGB's Bouddha Monipara BOP carried out the raid.
When they intercepted four individuals on two motorcycles coming from the border road around 4pm, the latter fled abandoning the vehicles. That led to a search of a nearby hill where the bullets were hidden.
However, several groups reportedly tried to stop the BGB personnel while they were returning to their camp with the bullets.
According to the BGB, the groups comprised more than 100 members.
When the incident was reported, two additional patrol teams led by acting commander Maj SM Imrul Kayes of the BGB’s Panchhari Battalion Headquarters quickly reached the spot, causing the miscreants to backtrack.
Lt Col Rabiul said they would continue operations through increased intelligence activities and regular patrols to check such crimes.
