A Mymensingh court has sentenced five men to life imprisonment for the murder of Ibrahim Khalil, a second-year Honours student at Ananda Mohan College.
Judge Farhana Ferdous of the Mymensingh special court delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon in the presence of four of the convicts, court Inspector PSM Mestachinur Rahman said.
Those sentenced are Nishad, Khorshed, Tushar, Sabuj and Pariz Diamond, all from the Patgudam Kashbon area of Mymensingh city. Four are identified with single names.
Among them, Khorshed remains absconding.
According to the prosecution, Ibrahim was robbed of all his belongings and fatally stabbed by muggers in Patgudam on January 18, 2018. The next day, his brother-in-law, Sarwar Hossain, filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Police Station.
Police later brought charges against seven people after an investigation. Following testimony from 11 witnesses, the court convicted five and fined each Tk 50,000, with six more months’ imprisonment in default.
Two other accused, Saddam and Pavel, were acquitted due to “lack of evidence”.
Public Prosecutor Md Rezaul Karim Dulal represented the state, while Md Akram Hossain defended the accused.
