Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam said on Monday that police have started taking disciplinary action against those who are yet to join at their respective workstations.
"Departmental action is being taken against the police personnel who are yet to join their respective duties. Notices have been served to the absentee police members. If they don't join their respective duties, our stance is clear that there is no scope to keep them in police service," he told the media after inspecting security measures taken on the occasion of Durga Puja at Dakeshwari National Temple in the capital.
"We have arrested 17 police officials following specific allegations against them. Those who (police officials) are yet to join their respective duties might have kept aloof due to cases filed against them or other reasons," he said.
He said that only 187 police officials are now absent in their workstations against the total 2,25,000 members.
He also said that 44 police personnel became victims during students-mass uprising against the immediate past Awami League government.
The police chief said that almost all police personnel have joined their respective duties.
He, however, said that they have recruited some new police personnel by replacing old ones.
Mr Mainul Islam said that a section of high police officials played a controversial role in suppressing the July-August student-mass movement.
