An unidentified group has shot and hacked a local council chairman to death in Satkhira’s Kaliganj upazila.
The incident took place at Krishnanagar Union’s Beledanga Bazar area at around 11:00 pm on Saturday night, said Kazi Mohiuddin, additional superintendent of district police.
The victim was identified as 47-year-old KM Mosharraf Hossain, an elected chairman from the Jatiya Party on the Krishnanagar council.
Mosharraf was speaking with others during a discussion at the Krishnanagar Jubo League office when a group of six perpetrators came riding motorbikes, attacked him and then fled, said Yasin Ali, assistant superintendent of Kaliganj Police Circle, citing witnesses.
He was rushed to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
“Mosharraf died on the way to hospital. He received two bullets to the head and several stab wounds on his arms,” according to health complex doctor Mohsin Ali.
Hossain had been elected twice as chairman, said Shyamli Adhikari, a female union council member of No. 4, 5, and 6 wards in Khishnanagar. He is survived by his three daughters, reports bdnews24.
Police are working to arrest the perpetrators, Yasin Ali said.
