Shampa Jewellers claims that nearly 500 Bhori (approximately 5.83kg) of gold jewellery has been stolen from its store in the Fortune Shopping Mall at Dhaka’s Mouchak intersection.

CCTV camera footage from the scene early on Thursday morning shows two burka-wearing individuals cutting the lock to the store’s shutter and entering.

Store owner Achintya Kumar Biswas says that the burka-clad robbers stole his jewellery, reports bdnews24.com.

“There were about 400 Bhori of gold jewellery on display,” he said. “In addition, there was another 100 Bhori in gold ornaments inside, which were being kept as collateral from customers. The thieves also took some cash.”

The stolen gold jewellery is worth nearly Tk 100 million, he said.

Achintya said that, like other days, he closed up shop around 9pm on Wednesday and went home. He was woken early in the morning by a call from a security guard at the market. He rushed to the scene and found that everything had been taken.

Mazharul Islam, assistant commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Zone, said the store owner had complained about the theft of 500 Bhori of gold jewellery and police would investigate the matter.
