A case has been filed after a man dragged a student into a bush on the Jahangirnagar University campus and attempted to rape her. He is suspected of being an outsider to the campus.
The university administration says that the incident took place after 11:00 pm on Tuesday in an area near the newly expanded section beside the old Fazilatunnesa Hall and Al-Beruni Hall, bdnews24.com reports.
On Wednesday morning, Md Gafrul Hasan Chowdhury, the deputy registrar of the university's security wing, filed a case of attempted rape and attempted murder with the Ashulia Police Station as the plaintiff, accusing an unknown individual.
Several attempts were made to contact Ashulia Police chief Rubel Howlader for comment on the case, but he could not be reached.
The victim is a student of the university's 2021-22 academic year. University security officials said she was walking along a road on the campus after 11:00 pm when the unknown individual started following her.
At one point, as they reached the road adjacent to the abandoned Fazilatunnesa Hall, the individual attacked her by tying a net-like object around her neck and dragged her into the nearby bushes. Some students on their motorcycles rushed to the spot when they heard her screams.
Shafiqul Islam, a student of the 43rd batch of the Department of Bengali, said: “We immediately stopped the motorcycle when we heard screams and went to the scene. When we arrived, we found a student in distress in the bushes.
Later, when the students informed the university security wing of the matter, security personnel and members of the proctorial body went to the spot, he said.
Deputy Registrar Gafrul said they went to the spot when the incident was reported by students around 11:15 pm.
He said, “We searched the entire area. However, the person was not found. Later, the victim was taken to the university medical centre for first aid. In addition, the administration has started reviewing CCTV footage as part of the investigation into the incident.”
“Analysis of the CCTV footage showed that the man tied a rope-like object around the student’s neck and dragged her into the bushes adjacent to the extension of Al-Beruni Hall,” said the university official.
“Based on the footage, we were initially able to identify one person.”
University Proctor Prof AKM Rashidul Alam said that immediately after receiving the news, administration representatives visited the scene and reviewed the CCTV footage.
He said, “We have seen the individual’s face after analysing footage. Our initial suspicion is he is not a university student.”
